Talking Tips

The responsibility for creation of a tobacco-free culture, and communication of this public health campaign, rests with all members of the Yale community. The following talking tips are designed to empower everyone in supporting a Tobacco-Free Yale.

If you see someone smoking or using tobacco products on campus:

  • Remind them that Tobacco-Free Yale is about making our campus more healthy and accessible for all students, faculty, staff and visitors.
  • Mention that we hope to create an environment that will support cessation efforts.
  • Emphasize that Yale offers numerous resources to help tobacco users quit or manage their needs and be more comfortable. Direct them to the tobaccofree.yale.edu site, or hand out a cessation card (coming soon).
  • We are not judging or excluding people who choose to smoke.
  • Note that for visitors, there are free resources as well on the website; we care about everyone’s health!

Please remember this is meant to be a health-related initiative. Your approach should be supportive and educational, not punitive.

Yale expects all members of the community to be respectful and courteous when approaching someone using tobacco products on campus.
